Christmas Eve in Kirinyaga County: A Tale of Quiet Streets and a Bustling Rooftop

Kerugoya, Kirinyaga County – Christmas Eve celebrations in Kirinyaga County took an unusual turn this year, marked by subdued festivities and unexpected revelry in select venues. While the day started with clear blue skies, the weather transitioned into heavy cloud cover by afternoon, mirroring the quiet mood that enveloped most of Kerugoya Ward.

A significant number of residents opted to stay home, likely a reflection of the tough economic times gripping the nation. Local hotels, often bustling during this season, saw only a handful of patrons enjoying meals and drinks. The usually vibrant sounds of Christmas carol services, popularly known as iciariro in the local dialect, were conspicuously absent. Most churches remained locked, devoid of the joyous melodies that typically characterize the night before Christmas.

However, amidst the subdued celebrations, one venue stood out. The Waves Sports Bar, located at Anchor Plaza, became the epicenter of revelry in Kerugoya. Hundreds of partygoers gathered to celebrate, transforming the rooftop establishment into a lively scene that could only be described as the modern-day "manger" for the birth of Christmas cheer.

The turnout was so overwhelming that management had to extend the party to another floor beneath the rooftop, ensuring enough space for the enthusiastic revelers. The event continued well into the night, starkly contrasting the quiet streets and shuttered churches elsewhere in the ward.

While this year's Christmas Eve may not have unfolded in the traditional spirit for many, it highlighted a shift in how Kerugoya residents adapt to changing economic and social landscapes. For some, the home offered a sanctuary from the pressures of daily life, while for others, the Waves Sports Bar became a haven of celebration and camaraderie.

As the county awakens to Christmas Day, the contrasting moods of quiet reflection and spirited festivity will undoubtedly linger in the memories of many, a reminder of the diverse ways people find joy and meaning during the holiday season.
