Kirinyaga, December 1, 2024 – A somber atmosphere engulfed the home of the late Dennis Chomba Mathenge as family, friends, and community members gathered on Sunday evening for a candlelight vigil to honor his memory. Chomba, alongside two others, tragically lost his life in a fatal road accident involving a lorry owned by VPP Shah Distributors on the Kiriaini-Kangema Road near Kanguni, Mathioya River.

The accident, which claimed three lives, has left the close-knit community in mourning. At Sunday’s vigil, attendees lit candles, shared heartfelt memories, and sang hymns, offering comfort to the grieving family. The event was marked by emotional tributes to Chomba, a beloved member of the community, known for his warm personality and unwavering dedication to his family and friends.

Speaking at the vigil, Chomba's cousin, Lorna Maina, described him as a "pillar of strength" for the family. "Dennis was always there when you needed him. His passing has left a void that words cannot fill," she said. Others echoed similar sentiments, highlighting his kindness, sense of humor, and commitment to his community.

The vigil served as a prelude to the final preparations for Chomba’s burial, which will take place on Wednesday, December 4, 2024. The ceremony will be held at Kiamuruga Primary School grounds and will be a joint memorial for all three victims of the accident. The shared service is expected to draw a large crowd as the community rallies together to mourn the loss and support the affected families.

Local leaders, including area MCA Fredrick Maina, have expressed condolences to the bereaved families and called for increased road safety measures. "We must ensure such tragedies are prevented in the future. The lives lost here remind us of the urgent need for action," Maina stated during a visit to the victims' homes earlier this week.

As the families continue to grapple with the enormity of their loss, the candlelight vigil served as a poignant reminder of the power of community and collective mourning in times of tragedy. Chomba’s legacy, along with those of his fellow victims, will live on in the hearts of all who knew them,
